and they assembled 1 the entire community together on the first day of the second month. 2 Then the people recorded their ancestry 3 by their clans and families, and the men who were twenty years old or older were listed 4 by name individually,
My God placed it on my heart to gather the leaders, 1 the officials, and the ordinary people so they could be enrolled on the basis of genealogy. I found the genealogical records 2 of those who had formerly returned. Here is what I found written in that record: 3
As for the Levites, 1 in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, Johanan and Jaddua the heads of families were recorded, as were the priests during the reign of Darius the Persian.
“When you take a census 1 of the Israelites according to their number, 2 then each man is to pay a ransom 3 for his life to the Lord when you number them, 4 so that there will be no plague among them when you number them.
But two men remained in the camp; one’s name was Eldad, and the other’s name was Medad. And the spirit rested on them. (Now they were among those in the registration, 1 but had not gone to the tabernacle.) So they prophesied in the camp.
The men whose names are listed came during the time of King Hezekiah of Judah and attacked the Hamites’ settlements, 1 as well as the Meunites they discovered there, and they wiped them out to this very day. They dispossessed them, 2 for they found pasture for their sheep there.
These were the descendants of Levi according to their families, that is, the leaders of families as counted and individually listed who carried out assigned tasks in the Lord’s temple and were twenty years old and up. 1
My hand will be against the prophets who see delusion and announce lying omens. They will not be included in the council 1 of my people, nor be written in the registry 2 of the house of Israel, nor enter the land of Israel. Then you will know that I am the sovereign Lord.
All those selected to be gatekeepers at the entrances numbered 212. Their names were recorded in the genealogical records of their settlements. David and Samuel the prophet 1 had appointed them to their positions. 2
They searched for their records in the genealogical materials, but none were found. They were therefore excluded 1 from the priesthood.
The descendants of Levi were recorded in the Book of the Chronicles 1 as heads of families up to the days of Johanan son of Eliashib.
and congregation of the firstborn, who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous, who have been made perfect,
Everyone who crosses over to those numbered, from twenty years old and up, is to pay an offering to the Lord.
