So Joab’s men 1 came and laid siege against him in Abel of Beth Maacah. They prepared a siege ramp outside the city which stood against its outer rampart. As all of Joab’s soldiers were trying to break through 2 the wall so that it would collapse,
He will kill your daughters in the field with the sword. He will build a siege wall against you, erect a siege ramp against you, and raise a great shield against you.
For I, the Lord God of Israel, have something more to say about the houses in this city and the royal buildings which have been torn down for defenses against the siege ramps and military incursions of the Babylonians: 1

War, 2 starvation, and disease are sure to make the city fall into the hands of the Babylonians 3 who are attacking it. 4 Lord, 5 you threatened that this would happen. Now you can see that it is already taking place. 6
So this is what the Lord says about the king of Assyria: ‘He will not enter this city, nor will he shoot an arrow here. 1 He will not attack it with his shielded warriors, 2 nor will he build siege works against it.
They mock kings and laugh at rulers. They laugh at every fortified city; they build siege ramps 1 and capture them.
