I will exact great vengeance upon them with angry rebukes. 1 Then they will know that I am the Lord, when I exact my vengeance upon them.’”
“For the Lord who rules over all says, ‘As I had planned to hurt 1 you when your fathers made me angry,’ says the Lord who rules over all, ‘and I was not sorry,
as unknown, and yet well-known; as dying and yet – see! – we continue to live; as those who are scourged 1 and yet not executed;
For take note, I am already beginning to bring disaster on the city that I call my own. 1 So how can you possibly avoid being punished? 2 You will not go unpunished! For I am proclaiming war against all who live on the earth. I, the Lord who rules over all, 3 affirm it!’ 4
You shall not bow down to them or serve them, 1 for I, the Lord, your God, am a jealous 2 God, responding to 3 the transgression of fathers by dealing with children to the third and fourth generations 4 of those who reject me, 5
Get out of Babylonia quickly, you foreign people. 1 Flee to save your lives. Do not let yourselves be killed because of her sins. For it is time for the Lord to wreak his revenge. He will pay Babylonia 2 back for what she has done. 3
Soon now I will pour out my rage 1 on you; I will fully vent my anger against you. I will judge you according to your behavior. I will hold you accountable for all your abominable practices.
My eye will not pity you; I will not spare 1 you. For your behavior I will hold you accountable, 2 and you will suffer the consequences of your abominable practices. Then you will know that it is I, the Lord, who is striking you. 3
for it is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be in fear, for it does not bear the sword in vain. It is God’s servant to administer retribution on the wrongdoer.
They will attack 1 you with weapons, 2 chariots, wagons, and with a huge army; 3 they will array themselves against you on every side with large shields, small shields, and helmets. I will assign them the task of judgment; 4 they will punish you according to their laws.
This is what the Lord says: “Because Edom has committed three crimes 1 – make that four! 2 – I will not revoke my decree of judgment. 3 He chased his brother 4 with a sword; he wiped out his allies. 5 In his anger he tore them apart without stopping to rest; 6 in his fury he relentlessly attacked them. 7
This is what the Lord says: “Because Judah has committed three covenant transgressions 1 – make that four! 2 – I will not revoke my decree of judgment. 3 They rejected the Lord’s law; 4 they did not obey his commands. Their false gods, 5 to which their fathers were loyal, 6 led them astray.
For see what this very thing, this sadness 1 as God intended, has produced in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, 2 what indignation, 3 what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, 4 what punishment! 5 In everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
