I will desolate Pathros, I will ignite a fire in Zoan, and I will execute judgments on Thebes.
“For the Lord disciplines the one he loves and chastises every son he accepts.” 1
“Everything that has happened to us has come about because of our wicked actions and our great guilt. Even so, our God, you have exercised restraint 1 toward our iniquities and have given us a remnant such as this.
Because he has done this,” 1 the Lord says, “I will punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his whole family. There will not be any of them left to experience the good things that I will do for my people. I, the Lord, affirm it! For he counseled rebellion against the Lord.”’” 2
I will not punish your daughters when they commit prostitution, nor your daughters-in-law when they commit adultery. For the men consort with harlots, they sacrifice with temple prostitutes. It is true: 1 “A people that lacks understanding will come to ruin!”
All of this is because 1 the Lord who rules over all 2 has said: ‘Cut down the trees around Jerusalem and build up a siege ramp against its walls. 3 This is the city which is to be punished. 4 Nothing but oppression happens in it. 5
Anyone who flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit. Anyone who climbs out of the pit will be caught in a trap. 1 For the time is coming when I will punish the people of Moab. 2 I, the Lord, affirm it! 3
So also 1 Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring towns, 2 since they indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural desire 3 in a way similar to 4 these angels, 5 are now displayed as an example by suffering the punishment of eternal fire.
The person who sins is the one who will die. A son will not suffer 1 for his father’s iniquity, and a father will not suffer 2 for his son’s iniquity; the righteous person will be judged according to his righteousness, and the wicked person according to his wickedness. 3
Then they said to one another, “It’s not right what we’re doing! This is a day to celebrate, but we haven’t told anyone. 1 If we wait until dawn, 2 we’ll be punished. 3 So come on, let’s go and inform the royal palace.”
What will you do on judgment day, 1 when destruction arrives from a distant place? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your wealth?
