Then tell them, 1 ‘The Lord God of Israel who rules over all 2 says, “I will bring 3 my servant 4 King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. I will set his throne over these stones which I 5 have buried. He will pitch his royal tent 6 over them.
I, the Lord, promise that 1 I will hand Pharaoh Hophra 2 king of Egypt over to his enemies who are seeking to kill him. I will do that just as surely as I handed King Zedekiah of Judah over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, his enemy who was seeking to kill him.’”
But that day belongs to the Lord God who rules over all. 1 It is the day when he will pay back his enemies. 2 His sword will devour them until its appetite is satisfied! It will drink their blood until it is full! 3 For the Lord God who rules over all 4 will offer them up as a sacrifice in the land of the north by the Euphrates River.
“From its earliest days Moab has lived undisturbed. It has never been taken into exile. Its people are like wine allowed to settle undisturbed on its dregs, never poured out from one jar to another. They are like wine which tastes like it always did, whose aroma has remained unchanged. 1
I will make the people of Elam terrified of their enemies, who are seeking to kill them. I will vent my fierce anger and bring disaster upon them,” 1 says the Lord. 2 “I will send armies chasing after them 3 until I have completely destroyed them.
For I will rouse into action and bring against Babylon a host of mighty nations 1 from the land of the north. They will set up their battle lines against her. They will come from the north and capture her. 2 Their arrows will be like a skilled soldier 3 who does not return from the battle empty-handed. 4
“Call for archers 1 to come against Babylon! Summon against her all who draw the bow! Set up camp all around the city! Do not allow anyone to escape! Pay her back for what she has done. Do to her what she has done to others. For she has proudly defied me, 2 the Holy One of Israel. 3
“Raise up battle flags throughout the lands. Sound the trumpets calling the nations to do battle. Prepare the nations to do battle against Babylonia. 1 Call for these kingdoms to attack her: Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. 2 Appoint a commander to lead the attack. 3 Send horses 4 against her like a swarm of locusts. 5
King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon came against Jerusalem with his whole army and set up camp outside it. 1 They built siege ramps all around it. He arrived on the tenth day of the tenth month in the ninth year that Zedekiah ruled over Judah. 2
ס (Samek) He rounded up 1 all my mighty ones; 2 The Lord 3 did this 4 in 5 my midst. He summoned an assembly 6 against me to shatter my young men. The Lord has stomped like grapes 7 the virgin daughter, Judah. 8
ב (Bet) The Lord 1 destroyed 2 mercilessly 3 all the homes of Jacob’s descendants. 4 In his anger he tore down the fortified cities 5 of Daughter Judah. He knocked to the ground and humiliated the kingdom and its rulers. 6
“Therefore, as surely as I live, says the sovereign Lord, because you defiled my sanctuary with all your detestable idols and with all your abominable practices, I will withdraw; my eye will not pity you, nor will I spare 1 you.
He said to me, “Son of man, do you see what they are doing – the great abominations that the people 1 of Israel are practicing here, to drive me far from my sanctuary? But you will see greater abominations than these!”
“‘Therefore, this is what the sovereign Lord says: Take note 1 that I am against your wristbands with which you entrap people’s lives 2 like birds. I will tear them from your arms and will release the people’s lives, which you hunt like birds.
“But if a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and practices wrongdoing according to all the abominable practices the wicked carry out, will he live? All his righteous acts will not be remembered; because of the unfaithful acts he has done and the sin he has committed, he will die. 1
When they ask you, ‘Why are you groaning?’ you will reply, ‘Because of the report that has come. Every heart will melt with fear and every hand will be limp; everyone 1 will faint and every knee will be wet with urine.’ 2 Pay attention – it is coming and it will happen, declares the sovereign Lord.”
you are guilty because of the blood you shed and defiled by the idols you made. You have hastened the day of your doom; 1 the end of your years has come. 2 Therefore I will make 3 you an object of scorn to the nations, an object to be mocked by all lands.
They will attack 1 you with weapons, 2 chariots, wagons, and with a huge army; 3 they will array themselves against you on every side with large shields, small shields, and helmets. I will assign them the task of judgment; 4 they will punish you according to their laws.
Tell them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: “‘Look, I am against 1 you, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great monster 2 lying in the midst of its waterways, who has said, “My Nile is my own, I made it for myself.” 3
