The shields of his warriors are dyed red; 1 the mighty soldiers are dressed in scarlet garments. 2 The metal fittings 3 of the chariots 4 shine like 5 fire 6 on the day of battle; 7 the soldiers brandish 8 their spears. 9
Their horses are faster than leopards and more alert 1 than wolves in the desert. 2 Their horses 3 gallop, 4 their horses come a great distance; like a vulture 5 they swoop down quickly to devour their prey. 6
before God’s decree becomes reality 1 and the day of opportunity disappears like windblown chaff, 2 before the Lord’s raging anger 3 overtakes 4 you – before the day of the Lord’s angry judgment overtakes you!
The Israelites who remain 1 will not act deceitfully. They will not lie, and a deceitful tongue will not be found in their mouth. Indeed, they will graze peacefully like sheep 2 and lie down; no one will terrify them.”
“Do not be like your ancestors, to whom the former prophets called out, saying, ‘The Lord who rules over all says, “Turn now from your evil wickedness,”’ but they would by no means obey me,” says the Lord.
Then I looked again and saw two women 1 going forth with the wind in their wings (they had wings like those of a stork) and they lifted up the basket between the earth and the sky.
Then the Lord will appear above them, and his arrow will shoot forth like lightning; the Lord God will blow the trumpet and will sally forth on the southern storm winds.
And they will be like warriors trampling the mud of the streets in battle. They will fight, for the Lord will be with them, and will defeat the enemy cavalry. 1
The Ephraimites will be like warriors and will rejoice as if they had drunk wine. Their children will see it and rejoice; they will celebrate in the things of the Lord.
You will trample on the wicked, for they will be like ashes under the soles of your feet on the day which I am preparing,” says the Lord who rules over all.
Indeed, this is what the Lord says to me: “The Lord will be like a growling lion, like a young lion growling over its prey. 1 Though a whole group of shepherds gathers against it, it is not afraid of their shouts or intimidated by their yelling. 2 In this same way the Lord who commands armies will descend to do battle on Mount Zion and on its hill. 3
Therefore, as surely as I live,” says the Lord who commands armies, the God of Israel, “be certain that Moab will become like Sodom and the Ammonites like Gomorrah. They will be overrun by weeds, 1 filled with salt pits, 2 and permanently desolate. Those of my people who are left 3 will plunder their belongings; 4 those who are left in Judah 5 will take possession of their land.”
And the Lord God said, “Now 1 that the man has become like one of us, 2 knowing 3 good and evil, he must not be allowed 4 to stretch out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”
