The soldiers of Babylonia will stop fighting. They will remain in their fortified cities. They will lose their strength to do battle. 1 They will be as frightened as women. 2 The houses in her cities will be set on fire. The gates of her cities will be broken down. 3
Into his right hand 1 comes the portent for Jerusalem – to set up battering rams, to give the signal 2 for slaughter, to shout out the battle cry, 3 to set up battering rams against the gates, to erect a siege ramp, to build a siege wall.
I will remove 1 the chariot from Ephraim and the warhorse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be removed. Then he will announce peace to the nations. His dominion will be from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River 2 to the ends of the earth.
Again, 1 I observed this on the earth: 2 the race is not always 3 won by the swiftest, the battle is not always won by the strongest; prosperity 4 does not always belong to those who are the wisest, wealth does not always belong to those who are the most discerning, nor does success 5 always come to those with the most knowledge – for time and chance may overcome 6 them all.
Indeed, this is what the Lord says to me: “The Lord will be like a growling lion, like a young lion growling over its prey. 1 Though a whole group of shepherds gathers against it, it is not afraid of their shouts or intimidated by their yelling. 2 In this same way the Lord who commands armies will descend to do battle on Mount Zion and on its hill. 3
I will see to it that all the Judean remnant that was determined to go 1 and live in the land of Egypt will be destroyed. Here in the land of Egypt they will fall in battle 2 or perish from starvation. People of every class 3 will die in war or from starvation. They will become an object of horror and ridicule, an example of those who have been cursed and that people use in pronouncing a curse. 4
Because you did that, I, the Lord, affirm that 1 a time is coming when I will make Rabbah, the capital city of Ammon, hear the sound of the battle cry. It will become a mound covered with ruins. 2 Its villages will be burned to the ground. 3 Then Israel will take back its land from those who took their land from them. I, the Lord, affirm it! 4
