So now you and the council 1 request the commanding officer 2 to bring him down to you, as if you were going to determine 3 his case 4 by conducting a more thorough inquiry. 5 We are ready to kill him 6 before he comes near this place.” 7
(I am speaking in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh.) 1 For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.
So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, continue working out your salvation with awe and reverence, 1
if indeed you remain in the faith, established and firm, 1 without shifting 2 from the hope of the gospel that you heard. This gospel has also been preached in all creation under heaven, and I, Paul, have become its servant.
Let no one who delights in humility and the worship of angels pass judgment on you. That person goes on at great lengths 1 about what he has supposedly seen, but he is puffed up with empty notions by his fleshly mind. 2
Finally then, brothers and sisters, 1 we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received instruction from us about how 2 you must live and please God (as you are in fact living) 3 that you do so more and more.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, 1 we must get rid of every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and run with endurance the race set out for us,
Now as for you, the anointing 1 that you received from him 2 resides 3 in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But as his 4 anointing teaches you about all things, it is true and is not a lie. Just as 5 it 6 has taught you, you reside 7 in him.
Dear friends, although I have been eager to write to you 1 about our common salvation, I now feel compelled 2 instead to write to encourage 3 you to contend earnestly 4 for the faith 5 that was once for all 6 entrusted to the saints. 7
Do not be afraid of the things you are about to suffer. The devil is about to have some of you thrown 1 into prison so you may be tested, 2 and you will experience suffering 3 for ten days. Remain faithful even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown that is life itself. 4
So Samson’s bride cried on his shoulder 1 and said, “You must 2 hate me; you do not love me! You told the young men 3 a riddle, but you have not told me the solution.” He said to her, “Look, I have not even told my father or mother. Do you really expect me to tell you?” 4
But the leaders of the Philistines became angry with him and said 1 to him, “Send the man back! Let him return to the place that you assigned him! Don’t let him go down with us into the battle, for he might become 2 our adversary in the battle. What better way to please his lord than with the heads of these men? 3
They replied, 1 “A man came up to meet us. He told us, “Go back to the king who sent you and tell him, ‘This is what the Lord says: “You must think there is no God in Israel! That explains why you are sending for an oracle from Baal Zebub, the god of Ekron. 2 Therefore you will not leave the bed you lie on, for you will certainly die.”’”
And now, though we share the same flesh and blood as our fellow countrymen, 1 and our children are just like their children, 2 still we have found it necessary to subject our sons and daughters to slavery. 3 Some of our daughters have been subjected to slavery, while we are powerless to help, 4 since our fields and vineyards now belong to other people.” 5
So now take 1 seven bulls and seven rams and go to my servant Job and offer a burnt offering for yourselves. And my servant Job will intercede 2 for you, and I will respect him, 3 so that I do not deal with you 4 according to your folly, 5 because you have not spoken about me what is right, as my servant Job has.” 6
I sent all my servants the prophets to warn you over and over again. They said, “Every one of you, stop doing the evil things you have been doing and do what is right. 1 Do not pay allegiance to other gods 2 and worship them. Then you can continue to live in this land that I gave to you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay any attention or listen to me.
