So the horseman 1 went to meet him and said, “This is what the king says, ‘Is everything all right?’” 2 Jehu replied, “None of your business! 3 Follow me.” The watchman reported, “The messenger reached them, but hasn’t started back.”
So these officials said to the king, “This man must be put to death. For he is demoralizing 1 the soldiers who are left in the city as well as all the other people there by these things he is saying. 2 This 3 man is not seeking to help these people but is trying to harm them.” 4
He said to me, “Do you see, son of man? Is it a trivial thing that the house of Judah commits these abominations they are practicing here? For they have filled the land with violence and provoked me to anger still further. Look, they are putting the branch to their nose! 1
“Therefore I tell you, do not worry 1 about your life, what you will eat or drink, or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t there more to life than food and more to the body than clothing?
If then I am in the wrong 1 and have done anything that deserves death, I am not trying to escape dying, 2 but if not one of their charges against me is true, 3 no one can hand me over to them. 4 I appeal to Caesar!” 5
(as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”). 1 He is our father 2 in the presence of God whom he believed – the God who 3 makes the dead alive and summons the things that do not yet exist as though they already do. 4
For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and grafted, contrary to nature, into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these natural branches be grafted back into their own olive tree?
For see what this very thing, this sadness 1 as God intended, has produced in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, 2 what indignation, 3 what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, 4 what punishment! 5 In everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.
You desire and you do not have; you murder and envy and you cannot obtain; you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask;
These men are 1 dangerous reefs 2 at your love feasts, 3 feasting without reverence, 4 feeding only themselves. 5 They are 6 waterless 7 clouds, carried along by the winds; autumn trees without fruit 8 – twice dead, 9 uprooted;
The beast you saw was, and is not, but is about to come up from the abyss 1 and then go to destruction. The 2 inhabitants of the earth – all those whose names have not been written in the book of life since the foundation of the world – will be astounded when they see that 3 the beast was, and is not, but is to come.
The king said, “Did Joab put you up to all of this?” 1 The woman answered, “As surely as you live, my lord the king, there is no deviation to the right or to the left from all that my lord the king has said. For your servant Joab gave me instructions. He has put all these words in your servant’s mouth.
“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and becomes another man’s wife, he may not take her back again. 1 Doing that would utterly defile the land. 2 But you, Israel, have given yourself as a prostitute to many gods. 3 So what makes you think you can return to me?” 4 says the Lord.
“A son naturally honors his father and a slave respects 1 his master. If I am your 2 father, where is my honor? If I am your master, where is my respect? The Lord who rules over all asks you this, you priests who make light of my name! But you reply, ‘How have we made light of your name?’
