So then, my dear friends, flee from idolatry.
The one who slaughters a bull also strikes down a man; 1 the one who sacrifices a lamb also breaks a dog’s neck; 2 the one who presents an offering includes pig’s blood with it; 3 the one who offers incense also praises an idol. 4 They have decided to behave this way; 5 they enjoy these disgusting practices. 6
he tore down the altars and Asherah poles, demolished the idols, and smashed all the incense altars throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.
This is what the Lord says: “What fault could your ancestors 1 have possibly found in me that they strayed so far from me? 2 They paid allegiance to 3 worthless idols, and so became worthless to me. 4
They rendered the beauty of his ornaments into pride, 1 and with it they made their abominable images – their detestable idols. Therefore I will render it filthy to them.
For the Israelites 1 must live many days without a king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred fertility pillar, without ephod or idols.
O Samaria, he has rejected your calf idol! My anger burns against them! They will not survive much longer without being punished, 1 even though they are Israelites!
He put an idolatrous image he had made in God’s temple, about which God had said to David and to his son Solomon, “This temple in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will be my permanent home. 1
Such idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field. They cannot talk. They must be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of them because they cannot hurt you. And they do not have any power to help you.” 1
“‘You took your sons and your daughters whom you bore to me and you sacrificed them 1 as food for the idols to eat. As if your prostitution not enough,
For the household gods 1 have spoken wickedness, the soothsayers have seen a lie, and as for the dreamers, they have disclosed emptiness and give comfort in vain. Therefore the people set out like sheep and become scattered because they have no shepherd. 2
But if someone says to you, “This is from a sacrifice,” do not eat, because of the one who told you and because of conscience 1 –
They rejected his rules, the covenant he had made with their ancestors, and the laws he had commanded them to obey. 1 They paid allegiance to 2 worthless idols, and so became worthless to the Lord. 3 They copied the practices of the surrounding nations in blatant disregard of the Lord’s command. 4
