But I have a few things against you: You have some people there who follow the teaching of Balaam, 1 who instructed Balak to put a stumbling block 2 before the people 3 of Israel so they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality. 4
They have made me jealous 1 with false gods, 2 enraging me with their worthless gods; 3 so I will make them jealous with a people they do not recognize, 4 with a nation slow to learn 5 I will enrage them.
Gather together and come! Approach together, you refugees from the nations! Those who carry wooden idols know nothing, those who pray to a god that cannot deliver.
When Asa heard these words and the prophecy of Oded the prophet, he was encouraged. 1 He removed the detestable idols from the entire land of Judah and Benjamin and from the cities he had seized in the Ephraimite hill country. He repaired the altar of the Lord in front of the porch of the Lord’s temple. 2
When you present your sacrifices 1 – when you make your sons pass through the fire – you defile yourselves with all your idols to this very day. Will I allow you to seek me, 2 O house of Israel? As surely as I live, declares the sovereign Lord, I will not allow you to seek me! 3
you are guilty because of the blood you shed and defiled by the idols you made. You have hastened the day of your doom; 1 the end of your years has come. 2 Therefore I will make 3 you an object of scorn to the nations, an object to be mocked by all lands.
All her carved idols will be smashed to pieces; all her metal cult statues will be destroyed by fire. 1 I will make a waste heap 2 of all her images. Since 3 she gathered the metal 4 as a prostitute collects her wages, the idols will become a prostitute’s wages again.” 5
These nations are worshiping the Lord and at the same time serving their idols; their sons and grandsons do just as their fathers have done, to this very day.
Those who trust in idols will turn back and be utterly humiliated, 1 those who say to metal images, ‘You are our gods.’”
They will repay you for your obscene conduct, and you will be punished for idol worship. 1 Then you will know that I am the sovereign Lord.”
The Philistines took the ark of God and brought it into the temple of Dagon, where they positioned it beside Dagon.
“When they return to it, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations.
With the rest of it he makes a god, his idol; he bows down to it and worships it. He prays to it, saying, ‘Rescue me, for you are my god!’
They consult their wooden idols, and their diviner’s staff answers with an oracle. The wind of prostitution blows them astray; they commit spiritual adultery 1 against their God.
They made an image of a calf at Horeb, and worshiped a metal idol.
When you cry out for help, let your idols 1 help you! The wind blows them all away, 2 a breeze carries them away. 3 But the one who looks to me for help 4 will inherit the land and will have access to 5 my holy mountain.”
Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are exiled. They will realize 1 how I was crushed by their unfaithful 2 heart which turned from me and by their eyes which lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves 3 because of the evil they have done and because of all their abominable practices.
