You who tell others not to commit adultery, do you commit adultery? You who abhor 1 idols, do you rob temples?
When the messengers came, they found only the idol on the bed and the quilt made of goat’s hair at its head.
Then say, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: O city, who spills blood within herself (which brings on her doom), 1 and who makes herself idols (which results in impurity),
“‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: I will destroy the idols, and put an end to the gods of Memphis. There will no longer be a prince from the land of Egypt; so I will make the land of Egypt fearful. 1
They will not defile themselves with their idols, their detestable things, and all their rebellious deeds. I will save them from all their unfaithfulness 1 by which they sinned. I will purify them; they will become my people and I will become their God.
And also on that day,” says the Lord who rules over all, “I will remove 1 the names of the idols from the land and they will never again be remembered. Moreover, I will remove the prophets and the unclean spirit from the land.
But regarding the Gentiles who have believed, we have written a letter, having decided 1 that they should avoid 2 meat that has been sacrificed to idols 3 and blood and what has been strangled 4 and sexual immorality.”
And what mutual agreement does the temple of God have with idols? For we are 1 the temple of the living God, just as God said, “I will live in them 2 and will walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” 3
But I have this against you: You tolerate that 1 woman 2 Jezebel, 3 who calls herself a prophetess, and by her teaching deceives 4 my servants 5 to commit sexual immorality and to eat food sacrificed to idols. 6
When these men broke into Micah’s house and stole 1 the carved image, the ephod, the personal idols, and the metal image, the priest said to them, “What are you doing?”
The five men who had gone to spy out the land broke in and stole 1 the carved image, the ephod, the personal idols, and the metal image, while the priest was standing at the entrance to the gate with the six hundred fully armed men. 2
Because they used to minister to them before their idols, and became a sinful obstacle 1 to the house of Israel, consequently I have made a vow 2 concerning them, declares the sovereign Lord, that they will be responsible 3 for their sin.
Even now they persist in sin! 1 They make metal images for themselves, idols that they skillfully fashion 2 from their own silver; all of them are nothing but the work of craftsmen! There is a saying about them: 3 “Those who sacrifice 4 to the calf idol are calf kissers!” 5
