“Indeed, 1 long ago you threw off my authority and refused to be subject to me. 2 You said, ‘I will not serve you.’ 3 Instead, you gave yourself to other gods on every high hill and under every green tree, like a prostitute sprawls out before her lovers. 4
She also saw 1 that I gave wayward Israel her divorce papers and sent her away because of her adulterous worship of other gods. 2 Even after her unfaithful sister Judah had seen this, 3 she still was not afraid, and she too went and gave herself like a prostitute to other gods. 4
However, you must confess that you have done wrong, 1 and that you have rebelled against the Lord your God. You must confess 2 that you have given yourself to 3 foreign gods under every green tree, and have not obeyed my commands,’ says the Lord.
Then the Lord said to me, “Those prophets are prophesying lies while claiming my authority! 1 I did not send them. I did not commission them. 2 I did not speak to them. They are prophesying to these people false visions, worthless predictions, 3 and the delusions of their own mind.
I will do so because these people 1 have rejected me and have defiled 2 this place. They have offered sacrifices in it to other gods which neither they nor their ancestors 3 nor the kings of Judah knew anything about. They have filled it with the blood of innocent children. 4
He will set fire 1 to the temples of the gods of Egypt. He will burn their gods or carry them off as captives. 2 He will pick Egypt clean like a shepherd picks the lice from his clothing. 3 He will leave there unharmed. 4
The terror you inspire in others 1 and the arrogance of your heart have deceived you. You may make your home in the clefts of the rocks; you may occupy the highest places in the hills. 2 But even if you made your home where the eagles nest, I would bring you down from there,” says the Lord.
I will give you into their hands and they will destroy your chambers and tear down your pavilions. They will strip you of your clothing and take your beautiful jewelry and leave you naked and bare.
I brought them to the land which I swore 1 to give them, but whenever they saw any high hill or leafy tree, they offered their sacrifices there and presented the offerings that provoke me to anger. They offered their soothing aroma there and poured out their drink offerings.
“‘But the Levitical priests, the descendants of Zadok 1 who kept the charge of my sanctuary when the people of Israel went astray from me, will approach me to minister to me; they will stand before me to offer me the fat and the blood, declares the sovereign Lord.
