A blacksmith works with his tool 1 and forges metal over the coals. He forms it 2 with hammers; he makes it with his strong arm. He gets hungry and loses his energy; 3 he drinks no water and gets tired.
A carpenter takes measurements; 1 he marks out an outline of its form; 2 he scrapes 3 it with chisels, and marks it with a compass. He patterns it after the human form, 4 like a well-built human being, and puts it in a shrine. 5
“As for those who consecrate and ritually purify themselves so they can follow their leader and worship in the sacred orchards, 1 those who eat the flesh of pigs and other disgusting creatures, like mice 2 – they will all be destroyed together,” 3 says the Lord.
Your priests 1 did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord?’ 2 Those responsible for teaching my law 3 did not really know me. 4 Your rulers rebelled against me. Your prophets prophesied in the name of the god Baal. 5 They all worshiped idols that could not help them. 6
They say to a wooden idol, 1 ‘You are my father.’ They say to a stone image, ‘You gave birth to me.’ 2 Yes, they have turned away from me instead of turning to me. 3 Yet when they are in trouble, they say, ‘Come and save us!’
People of Jerusalem, 1 I have seen your adulterous worship, your shameless prostitution to, and your lustful pursuit of, other gods. 2 I have seen your disgusting acts of worship 3 on the hills throughout the countryside. You are doomed to destruction! 4 How long will you continue to be unclean?’”
He will also take their gods into captivity to Egypt, along with their cast images and prized utensils of silver and gold. Then he will withdraw for some years from 1 the king of the north.
Israel was a fertile vine that yielded fruit. As his fruit multiplied, he multiplied altars to Baal. 1 As his land prospered, they adorned the fertility pillars.
Assyria cannot save us; we will not ride warhorses. We will never again say, ‘Our gods’ to what our own hands have made. For only you will show compassion to Orphan Israel!” 1
Do not seek Bethel! 1 Do not visit Gilgal! Do not journey down 2 to Beer Sheba! For the people of Gilgal 3 will certainly be carried into exile; 4 and Bethel will become a place where disaster abounds.” 5
These are the ones who now take oaths 1 in the name of the sinful idol goddess 2 of Samaria. They vow, 3 ‘As surely as your god 4 lives, O Dan,’ or ‘As surely as your beloved one 5 lives, O Beer Sheba!’ But they will fall down and not get up again.”
The one who says to wood, ‘Wake up!’ is as good as dead 1 – he who says 2 to speechless stone, ‘Awake!’ Can it give reliable guidance? 3 It is overlaid with gold and silver; it has no life’s breath inside it.
But to the cowards, unbelievers, detestable persons, murderers, the sexually immoral, and those who practice magic spells, 1 idol worshipers, 2 and all those who lie, their place 3 will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. 4 That 5 is the second death.”
They have quickly turned aside 1 from the way that I commanded them – they have made for themselves a molten calf and have bowed down to it and sacrificed to it and said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, which brought you up from the land of Egypt.’”
And he said to me, “Get up, go down at once from here because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have sinned! They have quickly turned from the way I commanded them and have made for themselves a cast metal image.” 1
Who decreed this from the beginning, so we could know? Who announced it 1 ahead of time, so we could say, ‘He’s correct’? Indeed, none of them decreed it! Indeed, none of them announced it! Indeed, no one heard you say anything!
No one thinks to himself, nor do they comprehend or understand and say to themselves: ‘I burned half of it in the fire – yes, I baked bread over the coals; I roasted meat and ate it. With the rest of it should I make a disgusting idol? Should I bow down to dry wood?’ 1
Tell me! Present the evidence! 1 Let them consult with one another! Who predicted this in the past? Who announced it beforehand? Was it not I, the Lord? I have no peer, there is no God but me, a God who vindicates and delivers; 2 there is none but me.
That is what will result from your making me angry by what you are doing. 1 You are making me angry by sacrificing to other gods here in the land of Egypt where you live. You will be destroyed for doing that! You will become an example used in curses 2 and an object of ridicule among all the nations of the earth. 3
