This will happen because they have abandoned me and offered sacrifices 1 to other gods, angering me with all the idols they have made. 2 My anger will ignite against this place and will not be extinguished!’”
Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told to you since the very beginning? Have you not understood from the time the earth’s foundations were made?
“Let them produce evidence! Let them tell us what will happen! Tell us about your earlier predictive oracles, 1 so we may examine them 2 and see how they were fulfilled. 3 Or decree for us some future events!
I announced them to you beforehand; before they happened, I predicted them for you, so you could never say, ‘My image did these things, my idol, my cast image, decreed them.’
In this way 1 I will pass sentence 2 on the people of Jerusalem and Judah 3 because of all their wickedness. For they rejected me and offered sacrifices to other gods, worshiping what they made with their own hands.” 4
Your priests 1 did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord?’ 2 Those responsible for teaching my law 3 did not really know me. 4 Your rulers rebelled against me. Your prophets prophesied in the name of the god Baal. 5 They all worshiped idols that could not help them. 6
Then those living in the towns of Judah and in Jerusalem will 1 go and cry out for help to the gods to whom they have been sacrificing. However, those gods will by no means 2 be able to save them when disaster strikes them.
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Will you defile yourselves like your fathers 1 and engage in prostitution with detestable idols?
He will also take their gods into captivity to Egypt, along with their cast images and prized utensils of silver and gold. Then he will withdraw for some years from 1 the king of the north.
Israel was a fertile vine that yielded fruit. As his fruit multiplied, he multiplied altars to Baal. 1 As his land prospered, they adorned the fertility pillars.
Assyria cannot save us; we will not ride warhorses. We will never again say, ‘Our gods’ to what our own hands have made. For only you will show compassion to Orphan Israel!” 1
Do not seek Bethel! 1 Do not visit Gilgal! Do not journey down 2 to Beer Sheba! For the people of Gilgal 3 will certainly be carried into exile; 4 and Bethel will become a place where disaster abounds.” 5
“I will destroy people and animals; I will destroy the birds in the sky and the fish in the sea. (The idolatrous images of these creatures will be destroyed along with evil people.) 1 I will remove 2 humanity from the face of the earth,” says the Lord.
