For you can be confident of this one thing: 1 that no person who is immoral, impure, or greedy (such a person is an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.
In no way did I mean the immoral people of this world, or the greedy and swindlers and idolaters, since you would then have to go out of the world.
So do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written, “The people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.” 1
But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who calls himself a Christian 1 who is sexually immoral, or greedy, or an idolater, or verbally abusive, 2 or a drunkard, or a swindler. Do not even eat with such a person.
But to the cowards, unbelievers, detestable persons, murderers, the sexually immoral, and those who practice magic spells, 1 idol worshipers, 2 and all those who lie, their place 3 will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. 4 That 5 is the second death.”
You must not round off the corners of the hair on your head or ruin the corners of your beard. 1
This is what the Lord says: “What fault could your ancestors 1 have possibly found in me that they strayed so far from me? 2 They paid allegiance to 3 worthless idols, and so became worthless to me. 4
All these idolaters 1 will prove to be stupid and ignorant. Every goldsmith will be disgraced by the idol he made. For the image he forges is merely a sham. 2 There is no breath in any of those idols. 3
All idolaters will prove to be stupid and ignorant. Every goldsmith will be disgraced by the idol he made. For the image he forges is merely a sham. There is no breath in any of those idols.
You rely 1 on your swords and commit abominable deeds; each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. Will you possess the land?’
For the land is full of people unfaithful to him. 1 They live wicked lives and they misuse their power. 2 So the land is dried up 3 because it is under his curse. 4 The pastures in the wilderness are withered.
“‘As for the prophet, if he is made a fool by being deceived into speaking a prophetic word – I, the Lord, have made a fool of 1 that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him and destroy him from among my people Israel.
They rejected his rules, the covenant he had made with their ancestors, and the laws he had commanded them to obey. 1 They paid allegiance to 2 worthless idols, and so became worthless to the Lord. 3 They copied the practices of the surrounding nations in blatant disregard of the Lord’s command. 4
All nations gather together, the peoples assemble. Who among them announced this? Who predicted earlier events for us? 1 Let them produce their witnesses to testify they were right; let them listen and affirm, ‘It is true.’
