“But if any prophet presumes to speak anything in my name that I have not authorized 1 him to speak, or speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet must die.
But they must make sure you learn to follow the religious practices of my people. 1 Once they taught my people to swear their oaths using the name of the god Baal. 2 But then, they must swear oaths using my name, saying, “As surely as the Lord lives, I swear.” 3 If they do these things, 4 then they will be included among the people I call my own. 5
Then the Lord said to me, “Those prophets are prophesying lies while claiming my authority! 1 I did not send them. I did not commission them. 2 I did not speak to them. They are prophesying to these people false visions, worthless predictions, 3 and the delusions of their own mind.
I did not send those prophets, though they claim to be prophesying in my name. They may be saying, ‘No war or famine will happen in this land.’ But I, the Lord, say this about 1 them: ‘War and starvation will kill those prophets.’ 2
“The Lord God of Israel who rules over all 1 also has something to say about Ahab son of Kolaiah and Zedekiah son of Maaseiah, who are prophesying lies to you and claiming my authority to do so. 2 ‘I will hand them over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon and he will execute them before your very eyes.
This will happen to them because they have done what is shameful 1 in Israel. They have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken lies while claiming my authority. 2 They have spoken words that I did not command them to speak. I know what they have done. I have been a witness to it,’ says the Lord.” 3
“I will send it out,” says the Lord who rules over all, “and it will enter the house of the thief and of the person who swears falsely in my name. It will land in the middle of his house and destroy both timber and stones.”
Then I will bring the remaining third into the fire; I will refine them like silver is refined and will test them like gold is tested. They will call on my name and I will answer; I will say, ‘These are my people,’ and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’” 1
But 1 listen to what the Lord has to say, all you people of Judah who are living in the land of Egypt. The Lord says, ‘I hereby swear by my own great name that none of the people of Judah who are living anywhere in Egypt will ever again invoke my name in their oaths! Never again will any of them use it in an oath saying, “As surely as the Lord God lives….” 2
