Yet 1 until now 2 she has refused to acknowledge 3 that I 4 was the one who gave her the grain, the new wine, and the olive oil; and that it was I who 5 lavished on her the silver and gold – which they 6 used in worshiping Baal! 7
But Joash said to all those who confronted him, 1 “Must you fight Baal’s battles? 2 Must you rescue him? Whoever takes up his cause 3 will die by morning! 4 If he really is a god, let him fight his own battles! 5 After all, it was his altar that was pulled down.” 6
He rebuilt the high places that his father Hezekiah had destroyed; he set up altars for Baal and made an Asherah pole just like King Ahab of Israel had done. He bowed down to all the stars in the sky 1 and worshiped 2 them.

They have built places here 1 for worship of the god Baal so that they could sacrifice their children as burnt offerings to him in the fire. Such sacrifices 2 are something I never commanded them to make! They are something I never told them to do! Indeed, such a thing never even entered my mind!
The Babylonian soldiers 1 that are attacking this city will break into it and set it on fire. They will burn it down along with the houses where people have made me angry by offering sacrifices to the god Baal and by pouring out drink offerings to other gods on their rooftops. 2
So now, bring to me all the prophets of Baal, as well as all his servants and priests. 1 None of them must be absent, for I am offering a great sacrifice to Baal. Any of them who fail to appear will lose their lives.” But Jehu was tricking them 2 so he could destroy the servants of Baal.
The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the high-ranking priests, 1 and the guards 2 to bring out of the Lord’s temple all the items that were used in the worship of 3 Baal, Asherah, and all the stars of the sky. 4 The king 5 burned them outside of Jerusalem in the terraces 6 of Kidron, and carried their ashes to Bethel. 7
