The one who keeps the law 1 is a discerning child, 2 but a companion of gluttons brings shame 3 to his parents. 4
The man 1 who loves wisdom brings joy to his father, 2 but whoever associates 3 with prostitutes wastes 4 his wealth. 5
Do not drag me away with evil men, with those who behave wickedly, 1 who talk so friendly to their neighbors, 2 while they plan to harm them! 3
Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend, and do not enter your brother’s house in the day of your disaster; a neighbor nearby is better than a brother far away. 1
For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; however, he must hand over 1 the fruit of his labor 2 as an inheritance 3 to someone else who did not work for it. This also is futile, and an awful injustice! 4
But I will restore the flock of Israel to their own pasture. They will graze on Mount Carmel and the land of Bashan. They will eat until they are full 1 on the hills of Ephraim and the land of Gilead. 2
I will set one shepherd over them, and he will feed them – namely, my servant David. 1 He will feed them and will be their shepherd.
He will assume his post 1 and shepherd the people 2 by the Lord’s strength, by the sovereign authority of the Lord his God. 3 They will live securely, 4 for at that time he will be honored 5 even in the distant regions of 6 the earth.
Be careful lest you entertain the wicked thought that the seventh year, the year of cancellation of debts, has almost arrived, and your attitude 1 be wrong toward your impoverished fellow Israelite 2 and you do not lend 3 him anything; he will cry out to the Lord against you and you will be regarded as having sinned. 4
Please forgive the sin of your servant, for the Lord will certainly establish the house of my lord, because my lord fights the battles of the Lord. May no evil be found in you all your days!
So get up now and go out and give some encouragement to 1 your servants. For I swear by the Lord that if you don’t go out there, not a single man will stay here with you tonight! This disaster will be worse for you than any disaster that has overtaken you from your youth right to the present time!”
Instead we will do everything we vowed we would do. 1 We will sacrifice and pour out drink offerings to the goddess called the Queen of Heaven 2 just as we and our ancestors, our kings, and our leaders previously did in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem.
