Then God made the overseer of the court officials sympathetic to Daniel. 1
When the time appointed by the king arrived, 1 the overseer of the court officials brought them into Nebuchadnezzar’s presence.
But Queen Vashti refused 1 to come at the king’s bidding 2 conveyed through the eunuchs. Then the king became extremely angry, and his rage consumed 3 him.
The king asked, 1 “By law, 2 what should be done to Queen Vashti in light of the fact that she has not obeyed the instructions of King Ahasuerus conveyed through the eunuchs?”
But the overseer of the court officials renamed them. He gave 1 Daniel the name Belteshazzar, Hananiah he named Shadrach, Mishael he named Meshach, and Azariah he named Abednego. 2
But Daniel made up his mind 1 that he would not defile 2 himself with the royal delicacies or the royal wine. 3 He therefore asked the overseer of the court officials for permission not to defile himself.
Daniel then spoke to the warden 1 whom the overseer of the court officials had appointed over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah:
On the seventh day, as King Ahasuerus was feeling the effects of the wine, 1 he ordered Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, the seven eunuchs who attended him, 2
Harbona, 1 one of the king’s eunuchs, said, “Indeed, there is the gallows that Haman made for Mordecai, who spoke out in the king’s behalf. It stands near Haman’s home and is seventy-five feet 2 high.” The king said, “Hang him on it!”
But he 1 responded to Daniel, “I fear my master the king. He is the one who has decided 2 your food and drink. What would happen if he saw that you looked malnourished in comparison to the other young men your age? 3 If that happened, 4 you would endanger my life 5 with the king!”
David assembled in Jerusalem 1 all the officials of Israel, including the commanders of the tribes, the commanders of the army divisions that served the king, the commanders of units of a thousand and a hundred, the officials who were in charge of all the property and livestock of the king and his sons, the eunuchs, and the warriors, including the most skilled of them.
