Again they wept loudly. 1 Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law goodbye, 2 but Ruth 3 clung tightly to her. 4
So her sons 1 married 2 Moabite women. (One was named Orpah and the other Ruth.) 3 And they continued to live there about ten years.
So Naomi returned, accompanied by her Moabite daughter-in-law Ruth, who came back with her from the region of Moab. 1 (Now they 2 arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.) 3
Naomi then said to her daughter-in-law Ruth, “It is good, my daughter, that you should go out to work with his female servants. 1 That way you will not be harmed, which could happen in another field.” 2
He said, “Who are you?” 1 She replied, “I am Ruth, your servant. 2 Marry your servant, 3 for you are a guardian of the family interests.” 4
Then Boaz said, “When 1 you acquire the field 2 from Naomi, 3 you must also 4 acquire Ruth the Moabite, 5 the wife of our deceased relative, 6 in order to preserve his family name by raising up a descendant who will inherit his property.” 7
So Boaz married Ruth and had sexual relations with her. 1 The Lord enabled her to conceive 2 and she gave birth to a son.
But Ruth replied, “Stop urging me to abandon you! 1 For wherever you go, I will go. Wherever you live, I will live. Your people will become my people, and your God will become my God.
One day Ruth the Moabite said to Naomi, “Let me go 1 to the fields so I can gather 2 grain behind whoever permits me to do so.” 3 Naomi 4 replied, “You may go, my daughter.”
So Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen carefully, 1 my dear! 2 Do not leave to gather grain in another field. You need not 3 go beyond the limits of this field. You may go along beside 4 my female workers. 5
Ruth the Moabite replied, “He even 1 told me, ‘You may go along beside my servants 2 until they have finished gathering all my harvest!’” 3
I have also acquired Ruth the Moabite, the wife of Mahlon, as my wife to raise up a descendant who will inherit his property 1 so the name of the deceased might not disappear 2 from among his relatives and from his village. 3 You are witnesses today.”
