So Ruth 1 went and gathered grain in the fields 2 behind the harvesters. Now she just happened to end up 3 in the portion of the field belonging to Boaz, who was from the clan of Elimelech.
Now at that very moment, 1 Boaz arrived from Bethlehem 2 and greeted 3 the harvesters, “May the Lord be with you!” They replied, 4 “May the Lord bless you!”
When she got up to gather grain, Boaz told 1 his male servants, “Let her gather grain even among 2 the bundles! Don’t chase her off! 3
So Ruth 1 worked beside 2 Boaz’s female servants, gathering grain until the end of the barley harvest as well as the wheat harvest. 3 After that she stayed home with her mother-in-law. 4
Now Boaz, with whose female servants you worked, is our close relative. 1 Look, tonight he is winnowing barley at the threshing floor. 2
When Boaz had finished his meal and was feeling satisfied, he lay down to sleep at the far end of the grain heap. 1 Then Ruth 2 crept up quietly, 3 uncovered his legs, 4 and lay down beside him. 5
Then Boaz said, “When 1 you acquire the field 2 from Naomi, 3 you must also 4 acquire Ruth the Moabite, 5 the wife of our deceased relative, 6 in order to preserve his family name by raising up a descendant who will inherit his property.” 7
So Boaz married Ruth and had sexual relations with her. 1 The Lord enabled her to conceive 2 and she gave birth to a son.
He set up the pillars in front of the temple, one on the right side and the other on the left. 1 He named the one on the right Jachin, 2 and the one on the left Boaz. 3
So Boaz said to Ruth, “Listen carefully, 1 my dear! 2 Do not leave to gather grain in another field. You need not 3 go beyond the limits of this field. You may go along beside 4 my female workers. 5
Boaz replied to her, 1 “I have been given a full report of 2 all that you have done for your mother-in-law following the death of your husband – how you left 3 your father and your mother, as well as your homeland, and came to live among people you did not know previously. 4
Later during the mealtime Boaz said to her, “Come here and have 1 some food! Dip your bread 2 in the vinegar!” So she sat down beside the harvesters. Then he handed 3 her some roasted grain. She ate until she was full and saved the rest. 4
Her mother-in-law asked her, 1 “Where did you gather grain today? Where did you work? May the one who took notice of you be rewarded!” 2 So Ruth 3 told her mother-in-law with whom she had worked. She said, “The name of the man with whom I worked today is Boaz.”
