For the Lord your God will bless you just as he has promised; you will lend to many nations but will not borrow from any, and you will rule over many nations but they will not rule over you.
Written in it were the following words: “Among the nations it is rumored 1 (and Geshem 2 has substantiated 3 this) that you and the Jews have intentions of revolting, and for this reason you are building the wall. Furthermore, according to these rumors 4 you are going to become their king.
I will perform a mighty act among them 1 and then send some of those who remain to the nations – to Tarshish, Pul, 2 Lud 3 (known for its archers 4 ), Tubal, Javan, 5 and to the distant coastlands 6 that have not heard about me or seen my splendor. They will tell the nations of my splendor.
“Announce 1 the news among the nations! Proclaim it! Signal for people to pay attention! 2 Declare the news! Do not hide it! Say: ‘Babylon will be captured. Bel 3 will be put to shame. Marduk will be dismayed. Babylon’s idols will be put to shame. Her disgusting images 4 will be dismayed. 5
“Raise up battle flags throughout the lands. Sound the trumpets calling the nations to do battle. Prepare the nations to do battle against Babylonia. 1 Call for these kingdoms to attack her: Ararat, Minni, and Ashkenaz. 2 Appoint a commander to lead the attack. 3 Send horses 4 against her like a swarm of locusts. 5
Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are exiled. They will realize 1 how I was crushed by their unfaithful 2 heart which turned from me and by their eyes which lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves 3 because of the evil they have done and because of all their abominable practices.
“Therefore say: ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Although I have removed them far away among the nations and have dispersed them among the countries, I have been a little 1 sanctuary for them among the lands where they have gone.’
But I will let a small number of them survive the sword, famine, and pestilence, so that they can confess all their abominable practices to the nations where they go. Then they will know that I am the Lord.”
I will turn the land of Egypt into a desolation in the midst of desolate lands; for forty years her cities will lie desolate in the midst of ruined cities. I will scatter Egypt among the nations and disperse them among foreign countries.
“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: It is not for your sake that I am about to act, O house of Israel, but for the sake of my holy reputation 1 which you profaned among the nations where you went.
I will magnify 1 my great name that has been profaned among the nations, that you have profaned among them. The nations will know that I am the Lord, declares the sovereign Lord, when I magnify myself among you in their sight.
The Lord responded 1 to his people, “Look! I am about to restore your grain 2 as well as fresh wine and olive oil. You will be fully satisfied. 3 I will never again make you an object of mockery among the nations.
Then I will gather all the nations, and bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat. 1 I will enter into judgment 2 against them there concerning my people Israel who are my inheritance, 3 whom they scattered among the nations. They partitioned my land,
Those survivors from Jacob will live among the nations, in the midst of many peoples. They will be like a lion among the animals of the forest, like a young lion among the flocks of sheep, which attacks when it passes through; it rips its prey 1 and there is no one to stop it. 2
“There will be harsh condemnation for the hypocrite who has a valuable male animal in his flock but vows and sacrifices something inferior to the Lord. For I am a great king,” 1 says the Lord who rules over all, “and my name is awesome among the nations.”
