That’s not the way things are. There is a man from the hill country of Ephraim named Sheba son of Bicri. He has rebelled 1 against King David. Give me just this one man, and I will leave the city.” The woman said to Joab, “This very minute 2 his head will be thrown over the wall to you!”
The prophet 1 visited the king of Israel and said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Because the Syrians said, “The Lord is a god of the mountains and not a god of the valleys,” I will hand over to you this entire huge army. 2 Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”
Indeed, this is what the Lord says to me: “The Lord will be like a growling lion, like a young lion growling over its prey. 1 Though a whole group of shepherds gathers against it, it is not afraid of their shouts or intimidated by their yelling. 2 In this same way the Lord who commands armies will descend to do battle on Mount Zion and on its hill. 3
Then you will know that I am the Lord – when their dead lie among their idols around their altars, on every high hill and all the mountaintops, under every green tree and every leafy oak, 1 the places where they have offered fragrant incense to all their idols.
“As for you, son of man, this is what the sovereign Lord says: Tell every kind of bird and every wild beast: ‘Assemble and come! Gather from all around to my slaughter 1 which I am going to make for you, a great slaughter on the mountains of Israel! You will eat flesh and drink blood.
