Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said,
Nevertheless, you did well to share with me in my trouble.
How much more valuable is a person than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.”
Then 1 some of the experts in the law 2 answered, “Teacher, you have spoken well!” 3
For you are certainly giving thanks well, but the other person is not strengthened.
They court you eagerly, 1 but for no good purpose; 2 they want to exclude you, so that you would seek them eagerly. 3
You were running well; who prevented you from obeying 1 the truth?
He must manage his own household well and keep his children in control without losing his dignity. 1
Deacons must be husbands of one wife 1 and good managers of their children and their own households.

Granted! 1 They were broken off because of their unbelief, but you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but fear!
So then, the one who marries 1 his own virgin does well, but the one who does not, does better. 2
For those who have served well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves 1 and great boldness in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. 2
Elders who provide effective leadership 1 must be counted worthy 2 of double honor, 3 especially those who work hard in speaking 4 and teaching.
Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience and desire to conduct ourselves rightly in every respect.
But if you fulfill the royal law as expressed in this scripture, 1 “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” 2 you are doing well.
