All 1 who heard him were amazed and were saying, “Is this not 2 the man who in Jerusalem was ravaging 3 those who call on this name, and who had come here to bring them as prisoners 4 to the chief priests?”
After there had been much debate, 1 Peter stood up and said to them, “Brothers, you know that some time ago 2 God chose 3 me to preach to the Gentiles so they would hear the message 4 of the gospel 5 and believe. 6
For this reason it is by faith so that it may be by grace, 1 with the result that the promise may be certain to all the descendants – not only to those who are under the law, but also to those who have the faith of Abraham, 2 who is the father of us all
So then, my dear friends, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence but even more in my absence, continue working out your salvation with awe and reverence, 1
Finally then, brothers and sisters, 1 we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received instruction from us about how 2 you must live and please God (as you are in fact living) 3 that you do so more and more.
For the law possesses a shadow of the good things to come but not the reality itself, and is therefore completely unable, by the same sacrifices offered continually, year after year, to perfect those who come to worship. 1
‘I know 1 where you live – where Satan’s throne is. Yet 2 you continue to cling 3 to my name and you have not denied your 4 faith in me, 5 even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, 6 who was killed in your city 7 where Satan lives.
But I have a few things against you: You have some people there who follow the teaching of Balaam, 1 who instructed Balak to put a stumbling block 2 before the people 3 of Israel so they would eat food sacrificed to idols and commit sexual immorality. 4
Now Elisha was sitting in his house with the community leaders. 1 The king 2 sent a messenger on ahead, but before he arrived, 3 Elisha 4 said to the leaders, 5 “Do you realize this assassin intends to cut off my head?” 6 Look, when the messenger arrives, shut the door and lean against it. His master will certainly be right behind him.” 7
He wrote them a second letter, saying, “If you are really on my side and are willing to obey me, 1 then take the heads of your master’s sons and come to me in Jezreel at this time tomorrow.” 2 Now the king had seventy sons, and the prominent 3 men of the city were raising them.
whose mother is a Danite and whose father is a Tyrian. 1 He knows how to work with gold, silver, bronze, iron, stones, and wood, as well as purple, violet, white, and crimson fabrics. He knows how to do all kinds of engraving and understands any design given to him. He will work with your skilled craftsmen and the skilled craftsmen of my lord David your father.
He said to the people of Judah: 1 “Let’s build these cities and fortify them with walls, towers, and barred gates. 2 The land remains ours because we have followed 3 the Lord our God and he has made us secure on all sides.” 4 So they built the cities 5 and prospered.
You must 1 observe the Sabbath 2 rather than doing anything you please on my holy day. 3 You must look forward to the Sabbath 4 and treat the Lord’s holy day with respect. 5 You must treat it with respect by refraining from your normal activities, and by refraining from your selfish pursuits and from making business deals. 6
“If a man divorces his wife and she leaves him and becomes another man’s wife, he may not take her back again. 1 Doing that would utterly defile the land. 2 But you, Israel, have given yourself as a prostitute to many gods. 3 So what makes you think you can return to me?” 4 says the Lord.
I sent all my servants the prophets to warn you over and over again. They said, “Every one of you, stop doing the evil things you have been doing and do what is right. 1 Do not pay allegiance to other gods 2 and worship them. Then you can continue to live in this land that I gave to you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay any attention or listen to me.
The Lord God of Israel who rules over all says, ‘You women 1 have confirmed by your actions what you vowed with your lips! You said, “We will certainly carry out our vows to sacrifice and pour out drink offerings to the Queen of Heaven.” Well, then fulfill your vows! Carry them out!’ 2
