Look all around you! 1 All of them gather to you. As surely as I live,” says the Lord, “you will certainly wear all of them like jewelry; you will put them on as if you were a bride.
Show the Lord your God the respect that is due him. 1 Do it before he brings the darkness of disaster. 2 Do it before you stumble 3 into distress like a traveler on the mountains at twilight. 4 Do it before he turns the light of deliverance you hope for into the darkness and gloom of exile. 5
So the Lord God of Israel has this to say about the leaders who are ruling over his people: “You have caused my people 1 to be dispersed and driven into exile. You have not taken care of them. So I will punish you for the evil that you have done. 2 I, the Lord, affirm it! 3
The Lord God of Israel who rules over all 1 says, “I will restore the people of Judah to their land and to their towns. When I do, they will again say 2 of Jerusalem, 3 ‘May the Lord bless you, you holy mountain, the place where righteousness dwells.’ 4
Fields will again be bought with silver, and deeds of purchase signed, sealed, and witnessed. This will happen in the territory of Benjamin, the villages surrounding Jerusalem, the towns in Judah, the southern hill country, the western foothills, and southern Judah. 1 For I will restore them to their land. 2 I, the Lord, affirm it!’” 3
I, the Lord, tell 1 you not to be afraid, you descendants of Jacob, my servant, for I am with you. Though I completely destroy all the nations where I scatter you, I will not completely destroy you. I will indeed discipline you but only in due measure. I will not allow you to go entirely unpunished.” 2
Yet some survivors will be left in it, sons and daughters who will be brought out. They will come out to you, and when you see their behavior and their deeds, you will be consoled about the catastrophe I have brought on Jerusalem – for everything I brought on it.
“You are righteous, 1 O Lord, but we are humiliated this day 2 – the people 3 of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, both near and far away in all the countries in which you have scattered them, because they have behaved unfaithfully toward you.
They will not pour out drink offerings of wine to the Lord; they will not please him with their sacrifices. Their sacrifices will be like bread eaten while in mourning; all those who eat them will make themselves ritually unclean. For their bread will be only to satisfy their appetite; it will not come into the temple of the Lord.
“I sent against you a plague like one of the Egyptian plagues. 1 I killed your young men with the sword, along with the horses you had captured. I made the stench from the corpses 2 rise up into your nostrils. Still you did not come back to me.” The Lord is speaking!
Twist and strain, 1 Daughter Zion, as if you were in labor! For you will leave the city and live in the open field. You will go to Babylon, but there you will be rescued. There the Lord will deliver 2 you from the power 3 of your enemies.
