So the whole community of the Israelites went out from the presence of Moses.
They came, men and women alike, 1 all who had willing hearts. They brought brooches, earrings, rings and ornaments, all kinds of gold jewelry, 2 and everyone came who waved 3 a wave offering of gold to the Lord.
That day Joshua captured Makkedah and put the sword to it and its king. He annihilated everyone who lived in it; he left no survivors. He did to its king what he had done to the king of Jericho. 1
They captured it and put the sword to its king, all its surrounding cities, and all who lived in it; they 1 left no survivors. As they 2 had done at Eglon, they 3 annihilated it and all who lived there.
Jehoiakim paid Pharaoh the required amount of silver and gold, but to meet Pharaoh’s demands Jehoiakim had to tax the land. He collected an assessed amount from each man among the people of the land in order to pay Pharaoh Necho. 1
As for the descendants of Aaron, the priests who lived in the outskirts of all their cities, 1 men were assigned 2 to disburse portions to every male among the priests and to every Levite listed in the genealogical records.
These are the provincial leaders 1 who settled in Jerusalem. (While other Israelites, the priests, the Levites, the temple attendants, and the sons of the servants of Solomon settled in the cities of Judah, each on his own property in their cities,
As for foreigners who become followers of 1 the Lord and serve him, who love the name of the Lord and want to be his servants – all who observe the Sabbath and do not defile it, and who are faithful to 2 my covenant –
But they did not listen to me or pay any attention to me! Each one of them followed the stubborn inclinations of his own wicked heart. So I brought on them all the punishments threatened in the covenant because they did not carry out its terms as I commanded them to do.’” 1
I said, 1 “Oh, mother, how I regret 2 that you ever gave birth to me! I am always starting arguments and quarrels with the people of this land. 3 I have not lent money to anyone and I have not borrowed from anyone. Yet all of these people are treating me with contempt.” 4
He said through them, 1 ‘Each of you must turn from your wicked ways and stop doing the evil things you are doing. 2 If you do, I will allow you to continue to live here in the land that I gave to you and your ancestors as a lasting possession. 3
It will so happen that everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be delivered. 1 For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem 2 there will be those who survive, 3 just as the Lord has promised; the remnant 4 will be those whom the Lord will call. 5
But I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for immorality, makes her commit adultery, and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
So they came to John and said to him, “Rabbi, the one who was with you on the other side of the Jordan River, 1 about whom you testified – see, he is baptizing, and everyone is flocking to him!”
