Now the advisers 1 of the king of Syria said to him: “Their God is a god of the mountains. That’s why they overpowered us. But if we fight them in the plains, we will certainly overpower them.
When the Israelites had mustered and had received their supplies, they marched out to face them in battle. When the Israelites deployed opposite them, they were like two small flocks 1 of goats, but the Syrians filled the land.
But Josiah did not turn back from him; 1 he disguised himself for battle. He did not take seriously 2 the words of Necho which he had received from God; he went to fight him in the Plain of Megiddo. 3
So I sent messengers to them saying, “I am engaged in 1 an important work, and I am unable to come down. Why should the work come to a halt when I leave it to come down to you?”
The Lord says to the people of Judah, 1 “What right do you have to be in my temple, my beloved people? 2 Many of you have done wicked things. 3 Can your acts of treachery be so easily canceled by sacred offerings 4 that you take joy in doing evil even while you make them? 5
One of their own people will be their leader. Their ruler will come from their own number. 1 I will invite him to approach me, and he will do so. 2 For no one would dare approach me on his own. 3 I, the Lord, affirm it! 4
I set a trap for you, Babylon; you were caught before you knew it. You fought against me. So you were found and captured. 1

“At the time of the end the king of the south will attack 1 him. Then the king of the north will storm against him 2 with chariots, horsemen, and a large armada of ships. 3 He 4 will invade lands, passing through them like an overflowing river. 5
“‘When a man has sexual intercourse with a woman, 1 although she is a slave woman designated for another man and she has not yet been ransomed, or freedom has not been granted to her, there will be an obligation to pay compensation. 2 They must not be put to death, because she was not free.
He said to me, “Do you see, son of man? Is it a trivial thing that the house of Judah commits these abominations they are practicing here? For they have filled the land with violence and provoked me to anger still further. Look, they are putting the branch to their nose! 1
