Meanwhile Jacob left Beer Sheba and set out for Haran.
Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?” Saul replied, “I am terribly troubled! The Philistines are fighting against me and God has turned away from me. He does not answer me – not by the prophets nor by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what I should do.”
After the men had left, Ahimaaz and Jonathan 1 climbed out of the well. Then they left and informed King David. They advised David, “Get up and cross the stream 2 quickly, for Ahithophel has devised a plan to catch you.” 3
Now Mephibosheth, Saul’s grandson, 1 came down to meet the king. From the day the king had left until the day he safely 2 returned, Mephibosheth 3 had not cared for his feet 4 nor trimmed 5 his mustache nor washed his clothes.
Elijah went from there and found Elisha son of Shaphat. He was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen; he was near the twelfth pair. Elijah passed by him and threw his robe over him.
So he said to the messengers of Ben Hadad, “Say this to my master, the king, ‘I will give you everything you demanded at first from your servant, but I am unable to agree to this latest demand.’” 1 So the messengers went back and gave their report.
When they withdrew, they left Joash 1 badly wounded. His servants plotted against him because of what he had done to 2 the son 3 of Jehoiada the priest. They murdered him on his bed. Thus 4 he died and was buried in the City of David, 5 but not in the tombs of the kings.
Ebed Melech departed the palace and went to speak to the king. He said to him,
Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are exiled. They will realize 1 how I was crushed by their unfaithful 2 heart which turned from me and by their eyes which lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves 3 because of the evil they have done and because of all their abominable practices.
Then the devil left him, and angels 1 came and began ministering to his needs.
As they were leaving Jericho, 1 a large crowd followed them.
And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and spent the night there.
Now when they heard this they were stunned, 1 and they left him and went away.
The leprosy left him at once, and he was clean.
But I have this against you: You have departed 1 from your first love!
