You have lived indulgently and luxuriously on the earth. You have fattened your hearts in a day of slaughter. 1
Then the men of Israel and Judah charged forward, shouting a battle cry. 1 They chased the Philistines to the valley 2 and to the very gates of Ekron. The Philistine corpses lay fallen along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron.
So David issued orders to the soldiers and they put them to death. Then they cut off their hands and feet and hung them 1 near the pool in Hebron. But they took the head of Ish-bosheth 2 and buried it in the tomb of Abner 3 in Hebron. 4
he stood his ground 1 and fought the Philistines until his hand grew so tired that it 2 seemed stuck to his sword. The Lord gave a great victory on that day. When the army returned to him, the only thing left to do was to plunder the corpses.
So, watch out!” 1 says the Lord. “The time will soon come when people will no longer call those places Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom. But they will call that valley 2 the Valley of Slaughter and they will bury so many people in Topheth they will run out of room. 3
The people I call my own attack me like birds of prey or like hyenas. 1 But other birds of prey are all around them. 2 Let all the nations gather together like wild beasts. Let them come and destroy these people I call my own. 3
If I go out into the countryside, I see those who have been killed in battle. If I go into the city, I see those who are sick because of starvation. 1 For both prophet and priest go about their own business in the land without having any real understanding.’” 2
In this place I will thwart 1 the plans of the people of Judah and Jerusalem. I will deliver them over to the power of their enemies who are seeking to kill them. They will die by the sword 2 at the hands of their enemies. 3 I will make their dead bodies food for the birds and wild beasts to eat.
The whole valley where dead bodies and sacrificial ashes are thrown 1 and all the terraced fields 2 out to the Kidron Valley 3 on the east as far north 4 as the Horse Gate 5 will be included within this city that is sacred to the Lord. 6 The city will never again be torn down or destroyed.”
‘The defenders of the city will go out and fight with the Babylonians. 1 But they will only fill those houses and buildings with the dead bodies of the people that I will kill in my anger and my wrath. 2 That will happen because I have decided to turn my back on 3 this city on account of the wicked things they have done. 4
So this is what the sovereign Lord says: I will stretch out my hand against Edom, and I will kill the people and animals within her, 1 and I will make her desolate; from Teman to Dedan they will die 2 by the sword.
He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath, 1 – prophesy, son of man – and say to the breath: ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these corpses so that they may live.’”
