Don’t let Hezekiah talk you into trusting in the Lord by saying, “The Lord will certainly rescue us; this city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.”
Do you not know? Do you not hear? Has it not been told to you since the very beginning? Have you not understood from the time the earth’s foundations were made?
I will do this so 1 people 2 will observe and recognize, so they will pay attention and understand that the Lord’s power 3 has accomplished this, and that the Holy One of Israel has brought it into being.” 4
“But you did not call for me, O Jacob; you did not long 1 for me, O Israel.
They do not comprehend or understand, for their eyes are blind and cannot see; their minds do not discern. 1
Remember these things, O Jacob, O Israel, for you are my servant. I formed you to be my servant; O Israel, I will not forget you! 1
Listen to me, you who know what is right, you people who are aware of my law! 1 Don’t be afraid of the insults of men; don’t be discouraged because of their abuse!
“It did no good for me to punish your people. They did not respond to such correction. You slaughtered your prophets like a voracious lion.” 1
Even the stork knows when it is time to move on. 1 The turtledove, swallow, and crane 2 recognize 3 the normal times for their migration. But my people pay no attention to 4 what I, the Lord, require of them. 5
The Lord answered, “This has happened because these people have rejected my laws which I gave them. They have not obeyed me or followed those laws. 1
The Lord, who is the inheritance 1 of Jacob’s descendants, 2 is not like them. He is the one who created everything. And the people of Israel are those he claims as his own. 3 He is known as the Lord who rules over all.” 4
For the Lord says, “I will now throw out those who live in this land. I will bring so much trouble on them that they will actually feel it.” 1
Even if they fast, I will not hear their cries for help. Even if they offer burnt offerings and grain offerings, I will not accept them. 1 Instead, I will kill them through wars, famines, and plagues.” 2
Maybe they will pay attention and each of them will stop living the evil way they do. 1 If they do that, then I will forgo destroying them 2 as I had intended to do because of the wicked things they have been doing. 3
He has said, ‘They will be carried off to Babylon. They will remain there until it is time for me to show consideration for them again. 1 Then I will bring them back and restore them to this place.’ I, the Lord, affirm this!” 2
