Just as ritual circumcision cuts away the foreskin as an external symbol of dedicated covenant commitment, you must genuinely dedicate yourselves to the Lord and get rid of everything that hinders your commitment to me, 1 people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem. If you do not, 2 my anger will blaze up like a flaming fire against you that no one will be able to extinguish. That will happen because of the evil you have done.”
“You should fear me!” says the Lord. “You should tremble in awe before me! 1 I made the sand to be a boundary for the sea, a permanent barrier that it can never cross. Its waves may roll, but they can never prevail. They may roar, but they can never cross beyond that boundary.” 2
O royal family descended from David. 1 The Lord says: ‘See to it that people each day 2 are judged fairly. 3 Deliver those who have been robbed from those 4 who oppress them. Otherwise, my wrath will blaze out against you. It will burn like a fire that cannot be put out because of the evil that you have done. 5
So 1 the Lord has this to say about Josiah’s son, King Jehoiakim of Judah: People will not mourn for him, saying, “This makes me sad, my brother! This makes me sad, my sister!” They will not mourn for him, saying, “Poor, poor lord! Poor, poor majesty!” 2
So I, the Lord, say: “You have not really obeyed me and granted freedom to your neighbor and fellow countryman. 1 Therefore, I will grant you freedom, the freedom 2 to die in war, or by starvation or disease. I, the Lord, affirm it! 3 I will make all the kingdoms of the earth horrified at what happens to you. 4
I will make the people of Elam terrified of their enemies, who are seeking to kill them. I will vent my fierce anger and bring disaster upon them,” 1 says the Lord. 2 “I will send armies chasing after them 3 until I have completely destroyed them.
ו (Vav) He destroyed his temple 1 as if it were a vineyard; 2 he destroyed his appointed meeting place. The Lord has made those in Zion forget both the festivals and the Sabbaths. 3 In his fierce anger 4 he has spurned 5 both king and priest.
ע (Ayin) The Lord has done what he planned; he has fulfilled 1 his promise 2 that he threatened 3 long ago: 4 He has overthrown you without mercy 5 and has enabled the enemy to gloat over you; he has exalted your adversaries’ power. 6
“Therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says: Because you are more arrogant 1 than the nations around you, 2 you have not followed my statutes and have not carried out my regulations. You have not even 3 carried out the regulations of the nations around you!
He said to me, “Do you see, son of man? Is it a trivial thing that the house of Judah commits these abominations they are practicing here? For they have filled the land with violence and provoked me to anger still further. Look, they are putting the branch to their nose! 1
Yet some survivors will be left in it, sons and daughters who will be brought out. They will come out to you, and when you see their behavior and their deeds, you will be consoled about the catastrophe I have brought on Jerusalem – for everything I brought on it.

Then I heard a holy one 1 speaking. Another holy one said to the one who was speaking, “To what period of time does the vision pertain – this vision concerning the daily sacrifice and the destructive act of rebellion and the giving over of both the sanctuary and army to be trampled?”
He will confirm a covenant with many for one week. 1 But in the middle of that week he will bring sacrifices and offerings to a halt. On the wing 2 of abominations will come 3 one who destroys, until the decreed end is poured out on the one who destroys.”
Even though he flourishes like a reed plant, 1 a scorching east wind will come, a wind from the Lord rising up from the desert. As a result, his spring will dry up; 2 his well will become dry. That wind 3 will spoil all his delightful foods in the containers in his storehouse.
