Look, the sovereign master 1 sends a strong, powerful one. 2 With the force of a hailstorm or a destructive windstorm, 3 with the might of a driving, torrential rainstorm, 4 he will knock that crown 5 to the ground with his hand. 6
The Egyptians are mere humans, not God; their horses are made of flesh, not spirit. The Lord will strike with 1 his hand; the one who helps will stumble and the one being helped will fall. Together they will perish. 2
So I will choose severe punishment 1 for them; I will bring on them what they dread, because I called, and no one responded, I spoke and they did not listen. They did evil before me; 2 they chose to do what displeases me.”
“Go and shout this message to my people in the countries in the north. 1 Tell them, ‘Come back to me, wayward Israel,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not continue to look on you with displeasure. 2 For I am merciful,’ says the Lord. ‘I will not be angry with you forever.
So I said, 1 “Oh, my dear people, 2 put on sackcloth and roll in ashes. Mourn with painful sobs as though you had lost your only child. For any moment now 3 that destructive army 4 will come against us.”
I have listened to them very carefully, 1 but they do not speak honestly. None of them regrets the evil he has done. None of them says, “I have done wrong!” 2 All of them persist in their own wayward course 3 like a horse charging recklessly into battle.
So I said to the Lord, 1 “O Lord who rules over all, 2 you are a just judge! You examine people’s hearts and minds. 3 I want to see you pay them back for what they have done because I trust you to vindicate my cause.” 4
If I go out into the countryside, I see those who have been killed in battle. If I go into the city, I see those who are sick because of starvation. 1 For both prophet and priest go about their own business in the land without having any real understanding.’” 2
I said, 1 “Lord, you know how I suffer. 2 Take thought of me and care for me. Pay back for me those who have been persecuting me. Do not be so patient with them that you allow them to kill me. Be mindful of how I have put up with their insults for your sake.
I will reduce the people of this city to desperate straits during the siege imposed on it by their enemies who are seeking to kill them. I will make them so desperate that they will eat the flesh of their own sons and daughters and the flesh of one another.”’” 1
Then the Lord said to me, 1 “Tell them that the Lord God of Israel who rules over all 2 says, 3 ‘Drink this cup 4 until you get drunk and vomit. Drink until you fall down and can’t get up. 5 For I will send wars sweeping through you.’ 6
