For if someone weak sees you who possess knowledge dining in an idol’s temple, will not his conscience be “strengthened” 1 to eat food offered to idols?
For now we see in a mirror indirectly, 1 but then we will see face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully, just as I have been fully known.
Look, for the third time I am ready to come to you, and I will not be a burden to you, because I do not want your possessions, but you. For children should not have 1 to save up for their parents, but parents for their children.
And if you address as Father the one who impartially judges according to each one’s work, live out the time of your temporary residence here 1 in reverence.
1 The Lord said to Moses, “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt; after that he will release you from this place. When he releases you, 2 he will drive you out completely 3 from this place.
He said, “If you will diligently obey 1 the Lord your God, and do what is right 2 in his sight, and pay attention 3 to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, then all 4 the diseases 5 that I brought on the Egyptians I will not bring on you, for I, the Lord, am your healer.” 6
If some of the meat of his peace offering sacrifice is ever eaten on the third day it will not be accepted; it will not be accounted to the one who presented it, since it is spoiled, 1 and the person who eats from it will bear his punishment for iniquity. 2
Then the Levites (because they have no allotment or inheritance with you), the resident foreigners, the orphans, and the widows of your villages may come and eat their fill so that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work you do.
But if the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, then she 1 must go to the elders at the town gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel; he is unwilling to perform the duty of a brother-in-law to me!”
Your ox will be slaughtered before your very eyes but you will not eat of it. Your donkey will be stolen from you as you watch and will not be returned to you. Your flock of sheep will be given to your enemies and there will be no one to save you.
At that time 1 my anger will erupt against them 2 and I will abandon them and hide my face from them until they are devoured. Many disasters and distresses will overcome 3 them 4 so that they 5 will say at that time, ‘Have not these disasters 6 overcome us 7 because our 8 God is not among us 9 ?’
Then when 1 many disasters and distresses overcome them 2 this song will testify against them, 3 for their 4 descendants will not forget it. 5 I know the 6 intentions they have in mind 7 today, even before I bring them 8 to the land I have promised.”
Get up! Ritually consecrate the people and tell them this: ‘Ritually consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, because the Lord God of Israel says, “You are contaminated, 1 O Israel! You will not be able to stand before your enemies until you remove what is contaminating you.” 2
