For the music director, Jeduthun; a psalm of David. I decided, 2 “I will watch what I say and make sure I do not sin with my tongue. 3 I will put a muzzle over my mouth while in the presence of an evil man.” 4
Do not forsake your friend and your father’s friend, and do not enter your brother’s house in the day of your disaster; a neighbor nearby is better than a brother far away. 1
He will judge disputes between nations; he will settle cases for many peoples. They will beat their swords into plowshares, 1 and their spears into pruning hooks. 2 Nations will not take up the sword against other nations, and they will no longer train for war.
Therefore, this is what the sovereign master, the Lord, says: “Look, I am laying 1 a stone in Zion, an approved 2 stone, set in place as a precious cornerstone for the foundation. 3 The one who maintains his faith will not panic. 4
It shatters in pieces like a clay jar, so shattered to bits that none of it can be salvaged. 1 Among its fragments one cannot find a shard large enough 2 to scoop a hot coal from a fire 3 or to skim off water from a cistern.” 4
“Tell King Hezekiah of Judah this: ‘Don’t let your God in whom you trust mislead you when he says, “Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.”
1 “This will be your reminder that I have spoken the truth: 2 This year you will eat what grows wild, 3 and next year 4 what grows on its own. But the year after that 5 you will plant seed and harvest crops; you will plant vines and consume their produce. 6
When you pass through the waters, I am with you; when you pass 1 through the streams, they will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not harm 2 you.
Wake up! Wake up! Clothe yourself with strength, O Zion! Put on your beautiful clothes, O Jerusalem, 1 holy city! For uncircumcised and unclean pagans will no longer invade you.
This is what the Lord says: “When 1 juice is discovered in a cluster of grapes, someone says, ‘Don’t destroy it, for it contains juice.’ 2 So I will do for the sake of my servants – I will not destroy everyone. 3
So, watch out!” 1 says the Lord. “The time will soon come when people will no longer call those places Topheth or the Valley of Ben Hinnom. But they will call that valley 2 the Valley of Slaughter and they will bury so many people in Topheth they will run out of room. 3
Vent your anger on the nations that do not acknowledge you. 1 Vent it on the peoples 2 who do not worship you. 3 For they have destroyed the people of Jacob. 4 They have completely destroyed them 5 and left their homeland in utter ruin.
How long must the land be parched 1 and the grass in every field be withered? How long 2 must the animals and the birds die because of the wickedness of the people who live in this land? 3 For these people boast, “God 4 will not see what happens to us.” 5
These wicked people refuse to obey what I have said. 1 They follow the stubborn inclinations of their own hearts and pay allegiance 2 to other gods by worshiping and serving them. So 3 they will become just like these linen shorts which are good for nothing.
But if you will not pay attention to this warning, 1 I will weep alone because of your arrogant pride. I will weep bitterly and my eyes will overflow with tears 2 because you, the Lord’s flock, 3 will be carried 4 into exile.”
I will make you as strong as a wall to these people, a fortified wall of bronze. They will attack you, but they will not be able to overcome you. For I will be with you to rescue you and deliver you,” 1 says the Lord.
So I will throw you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your ancestors have ever known. There you must worship other gods day and night, for I will show you no mercy.’”
