for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men 1 carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.
He died just as the Lord had prophesied through Elijah. 1 In the second year of the reign of King Jehoram son of Jehoshaphat over Judah, Ahaziah’s brother Jehoram replaced him as king of Israel, because he had no son. 2
You are tired out from listening to so much advice. 1 Let them take their stand – the ones who see omens in the sky, who gaze at the stars, who make monthly predictions – let them rescue you from the disaster that is about to overtake you! 2
It was like the vision I saw when he 1 came to destroy the city, and the vision I saw by the Kebar River. I threw myself face down.
The following is a record of what Amos prophesied. 1 He 2 was one of the herdsmen from Tekoa. These prophecies about Israel were revealed to him 3 during the time of 4 King Uzziah of Judah and 5 King Jeroboam son of Joash of Israel, two years before the earthquake. 6

When Josiah turned around, he saw the tombs there on the hill. So he ordered the bones from the tombs to be brought; 1 he burned them on the altar and defiled it. This fulfilled the Lord’s announcement made by the prophet while Jeroboam stood by the altar during a festival. King Josiah 2 turned and saw the grave of the prophet who had foretold this. 3
While he was speaking, Amaziah 1 said to him, “Did we appoint you to be a royal counselor? Stop prophesying or else you will be killed!” 2 So the prophet stopped, but added, “I know that the Lord has decided 3 to destroy you, because you have done this thing and refused to listen to my advice.”
But I see the prophets of Jerusalem 1 doing something just as shocking. They are unfaithful to me and continually prophesy lies. 2 So they give encouragement to people who are doing evil, with the result that they do not stop their evildoing. 3 I consider all of them as bad as the people of Sodom, and the citizens of Jerusalem as bad as the people of Gomorrah. 4
Her 1 leaders take bribes when they decide legal cases, 2 her priests proclaim rulings for profit, and her prophets read omens for pay. Yet they claim to trust 3 the Lord and say, “The Lord is among us. 4 Disaster will not overtake 5 us!”
