Such prayer for all 1 is good and welcomed before God our Savior,
1 But “when the kindness of God our Savior and his love for mankind appeared,
I prayed, 1 “O my God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God! For our iniquities have climbed higher than our heads, and our guilt extends to the heavens.
Its abundant produce goes to the kings you have placed over us due to our sins. They rule over our bodies and our livestock as they see fit, 1 and we are in great distress!
When that year was over, they came to him the next year and said to him, “We cannot hide from our 1 lord that the money is used up and the livestock and the animals belong to our lord. Nothing remains before our lord except our bodies and our land.
From the days of our fathers until this very day our guilt has been great. Because of our iniquities we, along with our kings and 1 priests, have been delivered over by the local kings 2 to sword, captivity, plunder, and embarrassment – right up to the present time.
“But now briefly 1 we have received mercy from the Lord our God, in that he has left us a remnant and has given us a secure position 2 in his holy place. Thus our God has enlightened our eyes 3 and has given us a little relief in our time of servitude.
‘Death has climbed in 1 through our windows. It has entered into our fortified houses. It has taken away our children who play in the streets. It has taken away our young men who gather in the city squares.’
Be strong! Let’s fight bravely for the sake of our people and the cities of our God! The Lord will do what he decides is best!” 1
There were others who said, “We are putting up our fields, our vineyards, and our houses as collateral in order to obtain grain during the famine.”
For who is our hope or joy or crown to boast of 1 before our Lord Jesus at his coming? Is it not of course you?
“So now, our God – the great, powerful, and awesome God, who keeps covenant fidelity 1 – do not regard as inconsequential 2 all the hardship that has befallen us – our kings, our leaders, our priests, our prophets, our ancestors, and all your people – from the days of the kings of Assyria until this very day!
“Everything that has happened to us has come about because of our wicked actions and our great guilt. Even so, our God, you have exercised restraint 1 toward our iniquities and have given us a remnant such as this.
