Grace and peace to you 1 from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ!
You be on guard against him 1 too, because he vehemently opposed our words.
Secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those that are revealed belong to us and our descendants 1 forever, so that we might obey all the words of this law.
Why has the Lord brought us into this land only to be killed by the sword, that our wives and our children should become plunder? Wouldn’t it be better for us to return to Egypt?”
So the Lord our God did indeed give over to us King Og of Bashan and his whole army and we struck them down until not a single survivor was left. 1
The Lord commanded us to obey all these statutes and to revere him 1 so that it may always go well for us and he may preserve us, as he has to this day.
Although we are slaves, our God has not abandoned us in our servitude. He has extended kindness to us in the sight of the kings of Persia, in that he has revived us 1 to restore the temple of our God and to raise 2 up its ruins and to give us a protective wall in Judah and Jerusalem. 3
Then I said, 1 “Lord, from the very beginning you have been seated on your glorious throne on high. You are the place where we can find refuge.
Then 1 I heard a loud voice in heaven saying, “The salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God, and the ruling authority 2 of his Christ, 3 have now come, because the accuser of our brothers and sisters, 4 the one who accuses them day and night 5 before our God, has been thrown down.
Our livestock must 1 also go with us! Not a hoof is to be left behind! For we must take 2 these animals 3 to serve the Lord our God. Until we arrive there, we do not know what we must use to serve the Lord.” 4
Just as it is written in the law of Moses, so all this calamity has come on us. Still we have not tried to pacify 1 the LORD our God by turning back from our sin and by seeking wisdom 2 from your reliable moral standards. 3
Assyria cannot save us; we will not ride warhorses. We will never again say, ‘Our gods’ to what our own hands have made. For only you will show compassion to Orphan Israel!” 1
Let our leaders take steps 1 on behalf of all the assembly. Let all those in our towns who have married foreign women come at an appointed time, and with them the elders of each town and its judges, until the hot anger of our God is turned away from us in this matter.”
