The Israelites had taken an oath in Mizpah, saying, “Not one of us will allow his daughter to marry a Benjaminite.”
So they asked, “Who from all the Israelite tribes did not assemble before the Lord at Mizpah?” Now it just so happened no one from Jabesh Gilead had come to the gathering. 1
When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, the leaders of the Philistines went up against Israel. When the Israelites heard about this, they were afraid of the Philistines.
Then the men of Israel left Mizpah and chased the Philistines, striking them down all the way to an area below Beth Car.
Year after year he used to travel the circuit of Bethel, 1 Gilgal, and Mizpah; he used to judge Israel in all of these places.
All those people that Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah.
Their territory ran 1 from Heshbon to Ramath Mizpah and Betonim, and from Mahanaim to the territory of Debir.
But in the seventh month 1 Ishmael son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, who was a member of the royal family, 2 came with ten of his men and murdered Gedaliah, 3 as well as the Judeans and Babylonians who were with him at Mizpah.
So 1 all these officers and their troops came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. The officers who came were Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maacathite. 2
Hear this, you priests! Pay attention, you Israelites! 1 Listen closely, 2 O king! 3 For judgment is about to overtake you! 4 For you were like a trap 5 to Mizpah, 6 like a net 7 spread out to catch Tabor. 8
King Asa ordered all the men of Judah (no exemptions were granted) to carry away the stones and wood that Baasha had used to build Ramah. 1 King Asa used the materials to build up 2 Geba (in Benjamin) and Mizpah.
All of the officers of the Judahite army 1 and their troops heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah to govern. So they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. The officers who came were Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite.
Shallun son of Col-Hozeh, head of the district of Mizpah, worked on the Fountain Gate. He rebuilt it, put on its roof, and positioned its doors, its bolts, and its bars. In addition, he rebuilt the wall of the Pool of Siloam, 1 by the royal garden, as far as the steps that go down from the City of David.
I for my part will stay at Mizpah to represent you before the Babylonians 1 whenever they come to us. You for your part go ahead and harvest the wine, the dates, the figs, 2 and the olive oil, and store them in jars. Go ahead and settle down in the towns that you have taken over.” 3
The Israelites asked, “Who from all the Israelite tribes has not assembled before the Lord?” They had made a solemn oath that whoever did not assemble before the Lord at Mizpah must certainly be executed. 1
Then Johanan son of Kareah spoke privately to Gedaliah there at Mizpah, “Let me go and kill Ishmael the son of Nethaniah before anyone knows about it. Otherwise he will kill you 1 and all the Judeans who have rallied around you will be scattered. Then what remains of Judah will disappear.”
