On the day after Gedaliah had been murdered, before anyone even knew about it,
Johanan and all the officers of the troops that had been hiding in the open country came to Gedaliah at Mizpah.
All of the officers of the Judahite army 1 and their troops heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah to govern. So they came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. The officers who came were Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan son of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah son of the Maacathite.
Now King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, as governor over the people whom he allowed to remain in the land of Judah. 1
Gedaliah took an oath so as to give them and their troops some assurance of safety. 1 He said, “You don’t need to be afraid to submit to the Babylonian officials. Settle down in the land and submit to the king of Babylon. Then things will go well for you.”
The first lot went to Asaph’s son Joseph and his relatives and sons – twelve in all, 1 the second to Gedaliah and his relatives and sons – twelve in all,
It was determined 1 that from the descendants of the priests, the following had taken foreign wives: from the descendants of Jeshua son of Jozadak, and his brothers: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.
Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jehucal 1 son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur 2 son of Malkijah had heard 3 the things that Jeremiah had been telling the people. They had heard him say,
So all these Judeans returned to the land of Judah from the places where they had been scattered. They came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. Thus they harvested a large amount of wine and dates and figs. 1
They were afraid of what the Babylonians might do 1 because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed to govern the country.
This is the prophetic message that the Lord gave to 1 Zephaniah son of Cushi, son of Gedaliah, son of Amariah, son of Hezekiah. Zephaniah delivered this message during the reign of 2 King Josiah son of Amon of Judah:
But in the seventh month 1 Ishmael son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, who was a member of the royal family, 2 came with ten of his men and murdered Gedaliah, 3 as well as the Judeans and Babylonians who were with him at Mizpah.
From the sons of Jeduthun: 1 Gedaliah, Zeri, 2 Jeshaiah, 3 Hashabiah, and Mattithiah – six in all, 4 under supervision of their father Jeduthun, who prophesied as he played a harp, giving thanks and praise to the Lord.
sent and had Jeremiah brought from the courtyard of the guardhouse. They turned him over to Gedaliah, 1 the son of Ahikam and the grandson of Shaphan, to take him home with him. 2 But Jeremiah stayed among the people. 3
So 1 all these officers and their troops came to Gedaliah at Mizpah. The officers who came were Ishmael son of Nethaniah, Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, Seraiah son of Tanhumeth, the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah son of the Maacathite. 2
Gedaliah, the son of Ahikam and grandson of Shaphan, took an oath so as to give them and their troops some assurance of safety. 1 “Do not be afraid to submit to the Babylonians. 2 Settle down in the land and submit to the king of Babylon. Then things will go well for you.
They said to him, “Are you at all aware 1 that King Baalis of Ammon has sent Ishmael son of Nethaniah to kill you?” But Gedaliah son of Ahikam would not believe them.
