Joshua told all the people, “Here is what the Lord God of Israel says: ‘In the distant past your ancestors 1 lived beyond the Euphrates River, 2 including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor. They worshiped 3 other gods,
(5:1) 1 Solomon ruled all the kingdoms from the Euphrates River 2 to the land of the Philistines, as far as the border of Egypt. These kingdoms paid tribute as Solomon’s subjects throughout his lifetime. 3
The king sent the following response: “To Rehum the commander, Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their colleagues who live in Samaria and other parts of Trans-Euphrates: Greetings! 1
Then Tattenai governor of Trans-Euphrates, Shethar-Bozenai, and their colleagues acted accordingly – with precision, just as Darius the king had given instructions. 1
Then they presented the decrees of the king to the king’s satraps and to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, who gave help to the people and to the temple of God.
Then I went to the governors of Trans-Euphrates, and I presented to them the letters from the king. The king had sent with me officers of the army and horsemen.
“I, King Artaxerxes, hereby issue orders to all the treasurers of 1 Trans-Euphrates, that you precisely execute all that Ezra the priestly scribe of the law of the God of heaven may request of you –
I said to the king, “If the king is so inclined, let him give me letters for the governors of Trans-Euphrates 1 that will enable me to travel safely until I reach Judah,
So look, the sovereign master 1 is bringing up against them the turbulent and mighty waters of the Euphrates River 2 – the king of Assyria and all his majestic power. It will reach flood stage and overflow its banks. 3
The Lord will attack Israel, making it like a reed that sways in the water. 1 He will remove Israel from this good land he gave to their ancestors 2 and scatter them beyond the Euphrates River, 3 because they angered the Lord by making Asherah poles. 4
I will place his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. 1
The Lord will divide 1 the gulf 2 of the Egyptian Sea; 3 he will wave his hand over the Euphrates River 4 and send a strong wind, 5 he will turn it into seven dried-up streams, 6 and enable them to walk across in their sandals.
And he sent messengers to Balaam 1 son of Beor at Pethor, which is by the Euphrates River 2 in the land of Amaw, 3 to summon him, saying, “Look, a nation has come out of Egypt. They cover the face 4 of the earth, and they are settling next to me.
I will remove 1 the chariot from Ephraim and the warhorse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow will be removed. Then he will announce peace to the nations. His dominion will be from sea to sea and from the Euphrates River 2 to the ends of the earth.
“Now you, Ezra, in keeping with the wisdom of your God which you possess, 1 appoint judges 2 and court officials who can arbitrate cases on behalf of all the people who are in Trans-Euphrates who know the laws of your God. Those who do not know this law should be taught.
