Context

16:11 You lead me in 1  the path of life; 2

I experience absolute joy in your presence; 3

you always give me sheer delight. 4

Psalms 68:18

Context

68:18 You ascend on high, 5

you have taken many captives. 6

You receive tribute 7  from 8  men,

including even sinful rebels.

Indeed the Lord God lives there! 9

1 tn Heb “cause me to know”; or “cause me to experience.”

2 tn This is a metaphorical way of saying, “you preserve my life.” The phrase “path of life” stands in contrast to death/Sheol in Prov 2:18-19; 5:5-6; 15:24.

3 tn Heb “abundance of joy [is] with your face.” The plural form of the noun שִׂמְחָה (simkhah, “joy”) occurs only here and in Ps 45:15. It may emphasize the degree of joy experienced.

4 tn Heb “delight [is] in your right hand forever.” The plural form of the adjective נָעִים (naim, “pleasant, delightful”) may here emphasize the degree of delight experienced (see Job 36:11).

5 tn Heb “to the elevated place”; or “on high.” This probably refers to the Lord’s throne on Mount Zion.

6 tn Heb “you have taken captives captive.”

7 tn Or “gifts.”

8 tn Or “among.”

9 tn Heb “so that the Lord God might live [there].” Many take the infinitive construct with -לְ (lamed) as indicating purpose here, but it is unclear how the offering of tribute enables the Lord to live in Zion. This may be an occurrence of the relatively rare emphatic lamed (see HALOT 510-11 s.v. II לְ, though this text is not listed as an example there). If so, the statement corresponds nicely to the final line of v. 16, which also affirms emphatically that the Lord lives in Zion.
