Psalms 37:13

37:13 The Lord laughs in disgust 1  at them,

for he knows that their day is coming. 2

Psalms 52:8

52:8 But I 3  am like a flourishing 4  olive tree in the house of God;

I continually 5  trust in God’s loyal love.

Psalms 59:9

59:9 You are my source of strength! I will wait for you! 6

For God is my refuge. 7

1 tn Heb “laughs.” As the next line indicates, this refers to derisive laughter (see 2:4). The Hebrew imperfect verbal form describes the action from the perspective of an eye-witness who is watching the divine response as it unfolds before his eyes.

2 tn Heb “for he sees that his day is coming.” As the following context makes clear (vv. 15, 17, 19-20), “his day” refers to the time when God will destroy evildoers.

3 tn The disjunctive construction (vav [ו] + subject) highlights the contrast between the evildoer’s destiny (vv. 5-7) and that of the godly psalmist’s security.

4 tn Or “luxuriant, green, leafy.”

5 tn Or, hyperbolically, “forever and ever.”

6 tc Heb “his strength, for you I will watch.” “His strength” should be emended to “my strength” (see v. 17). Some also emend אֶשְׁמֹרָה (’eshmorah, “I will watch”) to אֱזַמֵּרָה (’ezammerah, “I will sing praises [to you]”) See v. 17.

7 tn Or “my elevated place” (see Ps 18:2).
