Psalms 105:18

Context

105:18 The shackles hurt his feet; 1

his neck was placed in an iron collar, 2

Psalms 124:4-5

Context

124:4 The water would have overpowered us;

the current 3  would have overwhelmed 4  us. 5

124:5 The raging water

would have overwhelmed us. 6

1 tn Heb “they afflicted his feet with shackles.”

2 tn Heb “his neck came [into] iron.” The Hebrew term נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh) with the suffix could mean simply “he” or “his life.” But the nuance “neck” makes good sense here (note the reference to his “feet” in the preceding line). See L. C. Allen, Psalms 101-150 (WBC), 38.

3 tn Or “stream.”

4 tn Heb “would have passed over.”

5 tn Heb “our being.” The Hebrew term נֶפֶשׁ (nefesh) with a pronominal suffix is often equivalent to a pronoun, especially in poetry (see BDB 660 s.v. נֶפֶשׁ 4.a).

6 tn Heb “then they would have passed over our being, the raging waters.”
