Luke 2:39

Context

2:39 So 1  when Joseph and Mary 2  had performed 3  everything according to the law of the Lord, 4  they returned to Galilee, to their own town 5  of Nazareth. 6

Luke 12:50

Context
12:50 I have a baptism 7  to undergo, 8  and how distressed I am until it is finished!

Luke 22:37

Context
22:37 For I tell you that this scripture must be 9  fulfilled in me, ‘And he was counted with the transgressors.’ 10  For what is written about me is being fulfilled.” 11

1 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “so” to indicate the conclusion of the topic.

2 tn Grk “when they”; the referents (Joseph and Mary) have been specified in the translation for clarity.

3 tn Or “completed.”

4 sn On the phrase the law of the Lord see Luke 2:22-23.

5 tn Or “city.”

6 map For location see Map1 D3; Map2 C2; Map3 D5; Map4 C1; Map5 G3.

7 sn The figure of the baptism is variously interpreted, as some see a reference (1) to martyrdom or (2) to inundation with God’s judgment. The OT background, however, suggests the latter sense: Jesus is about to be uniquely inundated with God’s judgment as he is rejected, persecuted, and killed (Ps 18:4, 16; 42:7; 69:1-2; Isa 8:7-8; 30:27-28; Jonah 2:3-6).

8 tn Grk “to be baptized with.”

9 sn This scripture must be fulfilled in me. The statement again reflects the divine necessity of God’s plan. See 4:43-44.

10 tn Or “with the lawless.”

sn This is a quotation from Isa 53:12. It highlights a theme of Luke 22-23. Though completely innocent, Jesus dies as if he were a criminal.

11 tn Grk “is having its fulfillment.”
